DAN WAGNER - DIRECTOR

Dan Wagner combines a rich array of creative and technical experience, a strong talent for storytelling, a big heart and a slightly skewed world-view to bring a fresh approach to commercial-making, which he calls "Heart with a Grin".

No stranger to the spot milieu, Dan was a commercial First Assistant Cameraman for over a decade, working with such directors as David Fincher, Tarsem, Alex Proyas, Herb Ritts, Paul Dektor, Thom Higgins, Eric Ifergan, Gary Johns, Erich Joiner, Peter Kagan, Errol Morris, Jake Scott, Dominic Sena and Mark Story, among many others. Working closely with several DP/Directors, he was more than a focus-puller, he was an active participant on the front lines of innovation; often problem-solving shots that had never been attempted before, utilizing new techniques and approaches, and frequently camera-operating the shot. Recently, he has become a Director of Photography, as well. In the process, he has acquired an intimate working knowledge of the complexities and potentials of the hardware and language of commercials. Working with these Inspired Others has led him to clearly define his unique voice in his own work.

Prior to his camera years in Los Angeles, Dan called San Francisco home. An intimate of the alternative music scene there, Wagner directed music videos for Videowest, a local TV show that featured original clips of pop New Wave bands. Dan was one of Videowest’s "left-field" directors, preferring to work with the bands who were more on the fringe of accessibility. In this climate of limited budgets and high creativity, he learned to make a lot from a little, pushing the medium in new and exciting ways. He soon broke out on his own, forming 3RD RAIL MEDIA, producing and directing videos for some of the more experimental bands in San Francisco at the time (e.g. Chrome, Tuxedomoon, Counterparts, The Wonders Of Science, etc.).

What led him to the SF music scene in the first place had been his radio work in New Mexico. As the first fulltime News & Public Affairs Director at the NPR station in Albuquerque, he created new definitions for what is news, and pioneered creative new ways to package the news to an ever-changing market. Listeners were continually appreciating the imaginative and intimate quality with which he wrote and produced his newscasts. Wagner was always pushing the envelope of what radio could do, and in the process, expanding his listeners’ horizons, as well as his own.

Dan Wagner is an artist and a technician, an innovator and a clever craftsman. Always striving to bring something new and interesting to the table, Dan takes a bold, fresh look at the message in front of him and transforms it into something that his audience sees and feels as freshly as he does. With his high level of experience and skill, his deep level of commitment, his keen attention to detail, and his impeccable taste, Dan’s priority is creating work of consistently high quality; work which touches your heart and brings a grin to your face.
